In the field of online education platforms, there are many tools and elements that help us know how well we are doing. One of these evaluative tools is rubric. Rubric is a set of guidelines to assess what a learner is doing and how well he is doing. What’s more, it is available to focus on giving feedback to learners by rubric and encourage them how to do better. And consider their performance to have them more motivated and interested in education.
There is a list of four types of rubric:
The analytic presents a grid for criteria assessment. Learner’s developmental items are clear and each criteria has its own score and evaluation point. One of the best advantages of analytic rubric is its priority to define weaknesses and strengths of the learner.
According to its title, all the criteria for scoring and assessment are included together as a whole. It gives a single score according to the overall judgement of what the learner does. Some of its beneficial points are: (1) the increase of reliability in a consistent procedure and (2) save of time for the raters to have a clear-cut evaluation.
Developmental does not usually have an evaluative point of view. Instead, a topic will rise in our mind as “To what extent are learners are developing their learning ability or skill?”. So the idea of development is obviously applied here. Its positive point is to define the level of development going by and not to force a learner to develop a skill completely during the learning process. There is no self-actualization in learner’s education path, but in fact the developmental rubric is so hard to design.
This is a special kind because of its only two two levels of options for performance. Every factor has a binary form with two possible answers such as “yes or no“, “fail or pass“, etc. This is the fastest and easiest rubric to rate the learner’s progress. It resembles a more simple grading system for a learner. Checklists lack the ability to show a medium range of rating. This is due to its dual scoring methodology. In the end, this type is not applicable for criteria based performance items.
